Registering to vote is essential to participating in the American democracy at national, state, and local levels. As part of this process, government agencies collect certain information about voters. The laws in each state define who has access to this information, as well as the scope of the information that may be accessed and the purposes for which the information may be used. Certain groups of voters may qualify for enhanced confidentiality protections, such as pre-registrants or participants in an Address Confidentiality Program (ACP).

Alabama

Open records requests cannot access the age, Social Security Number, or proof of identity of a voter, or the residential address associated with their driver’s license number. Special confidentiality protections apply to participants in the Address Confidentiality Program.
West Virginia
- Access to the file: Digital or printed lists of registered voters are available for a fee to anyone upon request. Anyone can use a public terminal to review active, inactive, rejected, and canceled voter registration records.

- Purpose of use: Non-commercial purposes. Information may not be used for charitable or commercial solicitations or advertising, or sold or reproduced for resale.
