Claire believes that explaining law in understandable terms is crucial.

As a former chemist, Claire is meticulous and methodical
Surprisingly, Claire’s background prior to becoming a lawyer was in the technical sciences. She majored in Chemistry at Carleton College, worked at 3M, and later was employed at the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. on the international and litigation teams. I am not your typical lawyer. First of all, I don’t have the mindset of the typical lawyer, and I certainly haven’t had the usual career path. I came to my legal career after being a fashion designer in New York and moving away for family reasons. It’s hard to be a fashion designer anywhere else, it really is.

After I became a lawyer, I started my practice and started practicing just like every other lawyer I know practices. As I was going along, I kept noticing that most law practices violate the laws of good business (and clients hate that...

New York Law School
Before starting my own law firm, I worked for law firms in New York City. I represented people and businesses in lawsuits in court. Other clients needed help with transactions for themselves or their businesses. Some of my favorite clients were young families and small business owners and working with them inspired me to start my own law firm in 2011.

WHAT I LEARNED

Starting my own business helped me understand the challenges and opportunities that confront business owners at all stages of their entrepreneurial journeys. I was immediately amazed at the creative and innovative ways that these businesses worked with their customers. We...

I have a great deal of experience with court matters, but I am now concentrating more of my time on Wills and Probate. I have been an arbitrator of Minnesota No Fault Auto Accident Claims. I graduated from Hopkins (MN) High School in 1967; St. Olaf College, Northfield MN in 1971 (BA History and Asian Studies) and William Mitchell College of Law (now Mitchell Hamline Law School) in 1975 (JD), working days and attending classes at night through a four year program. I am married and have two adult children.

Planning your estate?

Estate planning arranges for the transfer of an individual's estate at the time of death. An estate consists of all property owned at death before it is distributed by will, trust, or intestacy laws. An estate may contain both real property and personal property. Estate planning allows an individual to decide exactly who will benefit from his or her estate, and to what extent. It can also reduce the taxes imposed on the transfer of assets at death.

An experienced estate planning lawyer can help minimize the amount of the estate surrendered to taxes as well as ensure that the management and distribution of the estate is carried out according to your plans. Particularly when your plans are complex and/or you have substantial property or assets, it is important to have an attorney who can ensure that your plan functions the way you intend. Depending on the complexity of your individual situation, your estate planning team may include attorneys, financial planners, bankers and insurance professionals. Some states certify attorneys as estate planning specialists, which means they have met certain requirements for experience, education, and testing in that field.

Fiduciary: A person or institution who manages money or property for another and who must exercise a standard care imposed by law, i.e., personal representative or executor of an estate, a trustee, etc.

Personal representative: The person who administers an estate. If named in a will, that person's title is an executor. If there is no valid will, that person's title is an administrator.
