I have been a family lawyer since 1985 and a family mediator since 1993. I joined the Collaborative Law Institute in 2003. With over twenty-five years of experience as a family law attorney and life experiences that include being a mother of two and grandmother of six, I am convinced that people who look back on their divorce are most satisfied when they were able to resolve issues peacefully with dignity and, if there are children, work positively with their former partner as co-parents. Collaborative law is a great process that can work for most people who want...

Before starting my own law firm, I worked for law firms in New York City. I represented people and businesses in lawsuits in court. Other clients needed help with transactions for themselves or their businesses. Some of my favorite clients were young families and small business owners and working with them inspired me to start my own law firm in 2011.

WHAT I LEARNED

Starting my own business helped me understand the challenges and opportunities that confront business owners at all stages of their entrepreneurial journeys. I was immediately amazed at the creative and innovative ways that these businesses worked with their customers. We...

Jill utilizes an innovative approach to family law - she see a divorce as a "family reorganization" and she encourages her clients to adhere to the following guiding principles: 1. A happy family in two houses is better than a miserable family in one house. 2. A divorce terminates a marriage, but a divorce does not terminate a family. 3. Conflict damages children. 4. A divorce is not to be started lightly - it impacts multiple generations. 5. All divorces cause losses. 6. We all experience a predictable pattern of emotions in response to losses. 7. You choose to make your life better. 8. Revenge against the other party does not make your life better. 9. Life's challenges...

Dealing with family law issues?

Family law generally concerns domestic relations and family-related matters such as marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships, adoptions, paternity, guardianships, domestic abuse, surrogacy, child custody, child abduction, the dissolution of marriage and associated issues. Each state has its own set of family laws, and traveling across state borders can sometimes affect your rights and those of your family.

Contrary to popular belief, seeking the advice of a family law attorney does not necessarily mean that something is amiss in your family. A family law attorney can help negotiate prenuptial/premarital agreements for clients in anticipation of marriage or advise same-sex couples on relevant legal issues affecting their relationship. They also can help with adoption proceedings and other procedures involving children.

Family law attorneys often do represent clients seeking a divorce, annulment or legal separation, and the complicated issues that can arise as a result. Although domestic abuse is a criminal offense, some family law attorneys are skilled at handling these situations, as they are often entangled with other family law issues.

Some jurisdictions certify lawyers as family law specialists, which means these attorneys have met the certifying body's minimum requirements for education, experience, and examination.

No-Fault Proceeding: A civil case in which parties may resolve their dispute without a formal finding of error or fault.

Paternity Suit: A lawsuit to determine the father of a child whose parents were not married when the child was born.
