I limit my practice of law to the narrow, specialized issues surrounding marriage and families. I have long enjoyed the opportunity to guide people through divorce to new phases of their lives through practical training in creative problem solving and long-term planning developed with each client’s unique goals in mind. Helping clients restructure after separation by creating lasting resolutions for their families has been a high point of my career.

I am a 2008 graduate of the Appalachian School of Law. I focus my practice on family law matters including divorce and separation, child custody and support, property settlement and alimony, adoptions, name changes, domestic violence protective orders and parent counsel in DSS matters. I believe problem-solving a primary responsibility of a lawyer. Assisting people through family chaos, ensuring the protection of their rights and property, helping to blend and expand families, and facilitating the transition to newly designed futures, is the heart of family law practice.

I began my practice in 1995, and shortly thereafter became a sole practitioner until July 2000 when I merged my practice into the firm of Gum, Hillier & McCroskey. I have been asked by many people why I practice in the area of family law and have often questioned this myself. The answer lies in the fact that when people come to me for assistance, they are often at a difficult crossroads in life, with choices to make that can dramatically alter their future. It is a time that I, as an attorney, can have a significant and positive...

At the family dinner table while I was growing up, we enjoyed vigorous argument and debate as much as the food. Even as a child, I loved finding out all of the facts. Going to law school seemed a natural choice. After graduating, I immediately headed to New York to work for a large, international law firm. I learned a tremendous amount. But something, or someone, was missing. You. And me. I realized that I wanted to be collaborating with my clients, that all those facts, all the research, all the arguments, even the law, only made...

Dealing with family law issues?

Family law generally concerns domestic relations and family-related matters such as marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships, adoptions, paternity, guardianships, domestic abuse, surrogacy, child custody, child abduction, the dissolution of marriage and associated issues. Each state has its own set of family laws, and traveling across state borders can sometimes affect your rights and those of your family.

Contrary to popular belief, seeking the advice of a family law attorney does not necessarily mean that something is amiss in your family. A family law attorney can help negotiate prenuptial/premarital agreements for clients in anticipation of marriage or advise same-sex couples on relevant legal issues affecting their relationship. They also can help with adoption proceedings and other procedures involving children.

Family law attorneys often do represent clients seeking a divorce, annulment or legal separation, and the complicated issues that can arise as a result. Although domestic abuse is a criminal offense, some family law attorneys are skilled at handling these situations, as they are often entangled with other family law issues.

Some jurisdictions certify lawyers as family law specialists, which means these attorneys have met the certifying body's minimum requirements for education, experience, and examination.

No-Fault Proceeding: A civil case in which parties may resolve their dispute without a formal finding of error or fault.

Paternity Suit: A lawsuit to determine the father of a child whose parents were not married when the child was born.
