I grew up the eldest son (of four sons) of the local legal services managing attorney in northwest Alabama. I pretty much always wanted to be a lawyer. After Vanderbilt for law school, I took a detour clerking for a federal circuit judge and working for a corporate law firm, both in Dallas, before returning to Alabama and eventually finding my true calling as a civil rights lawyer. Jon Townsend grew up in Northport, Alabama. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies degree from Ambridge University. After graduation, Jon attended Freed-Hardman University and graduated with a Master of Ministry degree.

Jon served as a minister and worked for the Churches of Christ in Alabama and Tennessee.
